Coach Johnny Parker—A Strength & Conditioning Legend
By Todd Durkin, MA, CSCS
I met a legend on Saturday. And it was one of the highlights of my busy few days at both the IDEA World & Perform Better conferences.
After teaching my “Secrets to Training ALL Athletes” program at Perform Better in Long Beach, a gentleman walked up to me in the hallway and said… “Coach Durkin, great job in the workshop. I sat in there and very much enjoyed the talk.”
I thanked him and asked him his name.
And he said “Coach Parker. Johnny Parker.”
And I was immediately stunned. And humbled. For those of you that don’t know, Coach Johnny Parker is a legend in the strength & conditioning field.
He’s one of the pioneers.
He’s one of the god-father’s.
He’s one of the great guys.
Coach Parker was an NFL Strength & Conditioning Coach for 30+ years. He has 2 Super Bowl rings with the NY Giants & Tampa Bay Bucs. And a storied career.
And for the next 40 minutes we just talked. About his mentors. About strength & conditioning. And about life.
So I recorded a special AUDIO message on Sunday afternoon (with a very hoarse voice!) on a few highlights from our conversation. You can listen to that now by clicking the link below:
This week’s WOW will be CARE.
Coach Parker shared a story that epitomized what every trainer… every coach…every athlete…and every and ANY person needs to be reminded:
“They don’t care how much you know until how much they know how much you CARE.”
Thank you Coach Parker for the time you spent with me. It was undoubtedly a conversation I will NEVER forget. Truly IMPACTful!
What are you going to do this week to demonstrate “CARE” for all the people in your life?
Much love… and much CARE!
PS. To learn even more about Coach Johnny Parker, I wanted to share the link below which gives a bit more of his history. It is well worth the few minutes to take a look. ENJOY!
