One of my earliest food memories is the butterfly sandwiches my mom used to make. I was convinced we were responsible for the butterflies coming into our house. She would have us stand at the black sliding door and yell at the top of our lungs:
“AHOY BUTTERFLIES, AHOY BUTTERFLIES”
We would yell and yell and yell and yell until the butterflies would fly into our house and land on our lunch plate. After my mom had time to “prepare” the butterflies, she would call to us and let us know we were successful in bringing the butterflies in. Then we would feast upon them and relish in our success. Although I believe my mom used Cheetos for the antennae and the body, the butterflies I’ve been preparing for my kids look like this:
My super easy is method, is send your kids to the back door to call in the butterflies. Then, cut your sandwiches in half and add your carrots for the body and antennae No need to be an artist here. I made my kids these while they were growing up, probably until they started kindergarten. To have a little more fun with your butterflies, you could use a butterfly cookie cutter, and offer a variety of wing decor to hungry kids!
We used a crinkle cutter to cut the jagged edge on our carrot antennae We cut the butterfly in half to place the carrot body square in the middle. And to curve the carrot antennae slightly, I warmed it up for about 20 seconds so they would bend.
Inside our sandwiches! For the inside, we had:
- Sliced cucumbers
- sliced tomato
- and laughing cow cheese.
