We have various pieces of equipment that you can use and today we will talk about some of the body weight exercises we incorporate into our workouts. Here is a little history review that goes back to the military. Remember calisthenics? Calisthenics are exercises designed to develop muscular tone and promote physical well-being. It origins are from Ancient Greece and its meanings are kalli = beautiful + sthenos = strength. It is the science, art, or practice of bodily exercises intended to promote strength, health, and grace of movement (thefreedictionary.com.) They have been used as a component of fitness in law enforcement, military, and athletic workouts. With all the history, we made sure to incorporate them in our boot camp so you get a great challenge. Take a look at these exercises that you will perform in our boot camp.
Jumping Jacks-Jumping jacks can help you burn fat and improve your conditioning. We used them as a warm up in our program. They are a great preparation exercise to work all major joints in your body. We place them in the beginning as a warm up. We also place them at various parts of your workout to kick up your heart rate to burn more calories in a short amount of time.
2. Squats- Squats are often hailed as the king of exercise moves.That’s because they involve a lot of muscles, which in turn means they burn a lot of calories. You learned to walk by squatting as a baby, and as natural of a motion this movement is, you might have forgotten how to do it. We make sure that you are doing them correctly. We watch to make sure that your heels are planted as you lower your body by pushing your hips back and bending your knees to approximately a 90 degree at the knee. When we look at you, your chest should be upright, hips back, and thighs parallel to the floor. We make sure that you look as if you are sitting in a chair, then rising up under control. We modify it based on your strength, endurance, and flexibility.
3. Push-Ups-Push-ups are one of the best upper body exercises invented because it really challenges not just your chest, shoulders, and triceps, it gets your core engaged. There are so many variations that can be used. They are safe and still challenge your body tremendously. For those with a heavier body weight, it is amazing how your body weight works against you in the push up. We have incorporated the push up with our TRX Suspension Training to make it more challenging. You no longer have your feet on the ground, you are elevated and have to stabilize your core more on the suspension trainer.
4. Squat Jacks-Squat Jacks are a combination of a jumping jack and a squat. It really burns up the thighs, butt, and calves. You will be on fire after completing our session. It works you in a manner that is very challenging because you have to coordinate a perfect squat while completing a jumping jack motion with your lower body. This can be used as a warm up for your workout or it can be a high intensity exercise depending on where we strategically position it in our workout. If you continually push yourself to get quicker, and do it for longer, you can ensure that it never becomes too easy.
5. Burpees – Burpees are an awesome, calorie-torching, endurance-building, full-body exercise. They’re also hard work, so it’s important you master your form and ease yourself in. This exercise can be modified to be easier or harder based on your fitness level. The great thing about them is that they incorporate all your major joints which take tons of energy to move. We really get your heart rate up and burning calories with our burpees sessions. Technique is key so just as with each other activity we spend a great amount of time working on getting the techniques down so you do not get injured.
